Paralympics Dashboard - all the medals, teams, sports (updated)

Over 4,200 athletes from 164 countries will compete in this years Paralympic Games in London. As we did for the Olympic Games last month, we have created a dashboard visualizing some of the key statistics behind this years Paralympic Games including teams, medals, gender and relative performance of each team. The dashboard is updated every few days with up-to-date medals information. We can take a look at a few of the key insights from the dashboard.

Participation The 4,286 athletes from 164 different countries makes this the biggest games ever. Sixteen countries have entered a team for the first time ever : Antigua & Barbuda, Brunei, Cameroon, Comoros, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, North Korea, San Marino, Solomon Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and US Virgin Islands. They will be competing in 21 different sports, by far the most popular in terms of competitor numbers is athletics followed by swimming, table-tennis, wheelchair basketball & road cycling. Power lifting however is the sport in which the most different countries will be competing with 61 different teams represented. 2776 male competitors have entered compared to 1510 female. This 65/35 split is a much wider split than in the Olympic Games which had a 56/44 split. Great Britain are the team with the most competitors (294), perhaps not surprisingly as the host nation. The treemap visualization of the 50 largest teams shows GB, China, USA, Brazil and Russia to be the 5 largest teams.

Medals The treemap on the dashboard also displays how successful per competitor each of the top 50 largest teams are, the darker the blue, the more medals per competitor. We have also included a separate list of the the most successful countries (to date). Macedonia lead the way with 0.5 medals per competitor, however, the caveat must be added that they only have 2 competitors. New Zealand have the second best medal rate with 0.44 and Cuba third, 0.39. Jumping back to the treemap, hovering over the data points in the treemap can reveal the underlying data. This shows us that GB currently have 294 competitors and 0.18 medals per athlete, China 285, 0.31 and USA 223, 0.15.

The data is correct at time of writing but as mentioned previously, we will be updating the dashboard frequently so please check the dashboard for our most up-to-date data. Take a look by clicking the screenshot below !
